Chaguanas is the fastest growing town in Trinidad. It is well poised to become the next city of Trinidad and Tobago. One wonders why Chaguanas opted to become a Borough rather than a City; well-known as the bargain capital of Trinidad and by extension the Caribbean, the Chaguanas of today has come a long way from its origins in the 16th century when the Western world first met the Amerindian tribe of Chaguanas, which gave the town its name.
For its strategic central location on the island of Trinidad, thousands of businesses have set up here and Chaguanas is the chosen town of many of the nation's top companies' headquarters. The flat land on which to build and the cooperative local government at the Chaguanas Borough Corporation can be thanked for much of the progress Chaguanas has achieved over the years.
Chaguanas is strategically located between the two major cities on the island of Trinidad, San Fernando in the South and Port of Spain in the North, both only about 30 minutes drive away. The International Airport at Piarco is even closer, only highlights the need for City-hood. When my hometown Montego Bay made the case for its rightful place in "City Heaven", the Government quickly gave the Republic of Montego Bay a seat around the City table. Should Chaguanas Become a City?
