Happy Diwali 2010

Happy Diwali everyone.

For those of you who don’t know, Diwali is a major festival in India celebrating the return of King Rama from his exhile. It’s also known as the festival of lights and is celebrated with lots of lights and fireworks, and of course, sweets! http://www.rajkidelicacies.com/

I would highly recommend reading the Ramayana. It’s an ancient Hindu epic of King Rama’s exhile. His wife is kidnapped by Ravana, the demon king of lanka, and so Rama and his brother Lakshmana journey to save her with the help of the Monkey-God Hanuman. It explores a great many moral themes and it the quintessential hero’s journey. I learnt a lot about Hindu values from reading this epic (and from "other" sources...). The other great epic of India is the Mahabharata. More on that another time!

Nigel! Research Shows: iPhone Beats Android

Whether it‘s checking email on the go, connecting with friends through social networks or using turn-by-turn navigation, the capabilities of smartphones are convincing more and more consumers to make the leap from a simple mobile phone to a more sophisticated device.  As of Q1 ‘10, Nielsen data shows that 23% of mobile consumers now have a smartphone, up from just 16% in Q2 ‘09.
smartphone-penetration
Vying for their share of the smartphone market are two of the tech industry’s fiercest competitors:  Apple, with its iconic iPhone, and Google, with its  Android operating system.
Between Q4 ’09 and Q1 ’10, Android and iPhone’s share of the smartphone market grew by 2% each. At the same time, smartphone leader Blackberry lost 2% share to fall to 35% of all smartphones while Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS also lost 2% to fall to 19%.
smartphone-share
Although Android and iPhone users both skew male (Android users show a 54/46 gender split compared to iPhone’s 55/45), there are some striking differences. Android users tend to be slightly younger than their iPhone peers- 55% of Android users are under the age of 34 — while just 47% of iPhone users fall within the same demographic. As is usually the case, age is also a prime determinant of income and education, with Android users slightly less wealthy and less educated.
smartphone-demo
Perhaps what sets iPhone apart from the rest of the field of smartphones is operating system loyalty. 80% of iPhone users want their next device to run iPhone OS while 70% of Android users want another Android device. This is in stark comparison to other major smartphone players: only 47% of Blackberry users want another Blackberry while only 34% of Windows Mobile users want another Windows Mobile device.
Among Android and iPhone users who would like to switch operating systems, the rate at which Android users would like to try iPhone is twice as high as that of iPhone users who would try Android. Given that iPhone penetration is three times that of Android, more  Android consumers are willing to try iPhone.
Dating site, OkCupid has completed a fascinating study in which they analyzed 552,000 user pictures from a numerical angle. According to the findings of OK Cupid’s survey, digital SLRs make you look more attractive, using camera flash makes you look older, large-aperture lenses make you hotter and iPhone users have more sex.
next-os
Finally, usage profiles for Android and iPhone are more like each other than the rest of the smartphone market. With a broader selection of titles available to them, predictably iPhone customers are more likely to have downloaded a game or played online, but Android users appear to be using their phones for a wide range of activities as well. Android users were more likely to engage in file-transfer activities like downloading ringtones, pictures, wallpaper and uploads.

HP Sues Former CEO Mark Hurd

Hewlett-Packard is suing its former chairman and CEO, Mark Hurd, alleging breach of contract and potential misappropriation of trade secrets. Hurd left the company under a cloud last month, after allegations that he was involved in a number of improprieties related to a human resources consultant the company hired. Under an agreement with HP, Hurd left the company — taking with him a $40-million severance package — but the former HP executive was quickly snapped up by Oracle, which today announced that he will become co-president of the database company. Oracle founder and CEO Larry Ellison is a friend of Hurd’s, and was a prominent supporter of the former HP CEO after the news broke about his departure.

In the statement of claim filed today, HP says that:

"Despite being paid millions of dollars in cash, stock and stock options in exchange for Hurd’s agreements to protect HP’s trade secrets and confidential information during his employment and following his departure from his positions at HP as Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and President, HP is informed and believes and thereon alleges that Hurd has put HP’s most valuable trade secrets and confidential information in peril.

Hurd accepted positions with Oracle Corp., a competitor of HP, yesterday as its President and as a member of its Board of Directors. In his new positions, Hurd will be in a situation in which he cannot perform his duties for Oracle without necessarily using and disclosing HP’s trade secrets and confidential information to others."

What your too cent on the matter? Should HP have sued?

Target-dated retirement mutual funds are getting more and more popular, offering instant diversification into stocks and bonds, as well as automatically shift to a more conservative blend as you near your target retirement date. An all in one fund! Whenever you see a finance article talk about the “best” of these mutual funds, invariably Vanguard and T. Rowe Price top the list. Recently, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine named T. Rowe Price “the best Target fund available”. I’ve been meaning to do my own personal (and imperfect) comparison for a while now.

4 Questions to Ask Your Cheating Woman

Before you get back together with your cheating Woman/wife there are four questions you really need to take the time to ask her. You may not believe you want the answers to these questions but they are answers you need to know the answers to. In this case, that need really is all that matters.

Your cheating woman/wife broke your heart. Failing to get the answer to these questions can do much worse to you than simply breaking your heart.

1) Is my health at risk? The problem with women in this situation is that they don't often plan for cheating. They don't have a steady supply of condoms on hand for when the perfect opportunity to cheat arises. Many women rely on some form of birth control as a contraceptive but that offers no protection from STDs. You need to find out if condoms were used and even then both of you need to have a full medical checkup now and in the months to come.

2) How long did the affair last? This is one question you need the answer to for the sake of your sanity. You need to know how long she was seeing this other man and just how serious it was. Women often cheat for emotional reasons rather than physical reasons so the odds are good that there is a strong emotional connection between your wife and the man she cheated on you with. It may or may not be love but the longer the affair lasted, the greater the odds are that it's something much stronger than mere curiosity.

3) Why? This is one of the first questions many women ask men when the roles are reversed but surprisingly few men ask their woman/wives when the woman/wife is the one doing the cheating. You need to know why she cheated before you can move forward. Otherwise, the underlying problems in the relationship that made cheating an attractive possibility will continue and she may be tempted to cheat on you again. It's not enough just to know why; you have to do something about it too.

4) Where does this leave us? Make sure to use the word "us" rather than "me" in this particular question. It shows your woman/wife that you are an "idiot, will to forgive" and still willing to try and make the relationship work. It also shows her that she's not in this alone (because you were there helping her to get laid). She feels much more alone than you realize at this moment. If she's hoping you can work things out this question will convince her you can.

Poised to Become the Next City of Trinidad and Tobago

Chaguanas is the fastest growing town in Trinidad. It is well poised to become the next city of Trinidad and Tobago. One wonders why Chaguanas opted to become a Borough rather than a City; well-known as the bargain capital of Trinidad and by extension the Caribbean, the Chaguanas of today has come a long way from its origins in the 16th century when the Western world first met the Amerindian tribe of Chaguanas, which gave the town its name.

For its strategic central location on the island of Trinidad, thousands of businesses have set up here and Chaguanas is the chosen town of many of the nation's top companies' headquarters. The flat land on which to build and the cooperative local government at the Chaguanas Borough Corporation can be thanked for much of the progress Chaguanas has achieved over the years.

Chaguanas is strategically located between the two major cities on the island of Trinidad, San Fernando in the South and Port of Spain in the North, both only about 30 minutes drive away. The International Airport at Piarco is even closer, only highlights the need for City-hood. When my hometown Montego Bay made the case for its rightful place in "City Heaven", the Government quickly gave the Republic of Montego Bay a seat around the City table. Should Chaguanas Become a City?

Study Show: iPhone Users Have More Sex

Dating site, OkCupid has completed a fascinating study in which they analyzed 552,000 user pictures from a numerical angle.

According to the findings of OK Cupid’s survey, digital SLRs make you look more attractive, using camera flash makes you look older, large-aperture lenses make you hotter and iPhone users have more sex.

The chart below compares the number of sexual partners of people who use an iPhone, BlackBerry or Android phone. The survey was restricted only to people aged 30.

As you can see from the chart below, iPhone users have more sexual partners than BlackBerry and Android phone users.

Android users: Men had 6 sexual partners in their lifetime, while women had 6.1 sexual partners.

BlackBerry users: Men had 8.1 sexual partners in their lifetime, while women had 8.8 sexual partners.

iPhone users: Men had 10 sexual partners, while women had 12.3 sexual partners, twice that of Android phone users.

As you can see from the chart below, iPhone wins even when you break down the number of sexual partners by smartphone, by age.

OkCupid cheekily concludes:

Finally, statistical proof that iPhone users aren't just getting fucked by Apple.

So I guess with that we can say that the smartphone wars are over :)

Don’t forget to pass this on to your friends who have a BlackBerry or Android phone.

My Home Town!!!

Montego Bay defies description: posh resort, package tour playground, market town, commercial centre, seaport, slum, second city, capital of the west - its disparate elements co-exist without blending. The result is an atmosphere of schizophrenic energy. Almost all tourists enter Jamaica through the Donald Sangster airport but Montego Bay has long outgrown the label "tourist town". It is sometimes referred to as "the Republic" a nickname dating back to the last century when independent local landowners criticized the government for neglecting the western parishes. That situation still exists and true Montegonians, born in the bay and known as "Bawn a bays" sometimes still threaten, only half in jest, to secede from the rest of the island. The Voices in my Head

"Sila, How do I tell you or can I even begin to explain the depth of my feelings for you? When he talks about you, I can hear your tender sweet voice. Listening to him describe you makes my heart pound, wishing that I could be the one who belonged to you. Oh, how I so want to be near you; to cuddle up and snuggle with you night after night--if only to watch the way you move; those graceful feminine gestures accentuated by your natural beauty."

"When I think about you, everything that I have ever considered beautiful pales in comparison. How I long to be your companion and your protector."

"Yet, If you are truly as gorgeous on the inside as he says you are, then how could I ever want to be possessed by anyone other than you? His descriptions of your gentle nature, happy spirit, and quick wit has a way of lighting up the dark places of his soul. If only you would do that for me, too. I just know that I will find all that anyone could ever possibly desire or want in you."

"However, it is my fate to only be able to admire you from afar, for if I were him, I'd bring you roses and take you to the moon--and never, ever want to come back again."

I may have being "like" So HaPPy!

Have you spent years looking for Mr. Right, or Ms. Right? Do you feel like you come up empty each time, or even worse- end up repeating an old pattern with the same type of person again and again?

It’s an uncomfortable reality for so many of us as we look to be in a relationship with someone. Our requirements may be unconsciously stemming from old emotional patterns within our psyche. Those patterns may have been formulated in early childhood, during puberty, or even from our ‘first love’. Each time we grow into a new relationship, we hope that we have learned enough from the sum of our previous experiences to say that we are prepared to reap the harvest of our true partner. Unfortunately, if unfinished business still resides within your mind and heart, it will eventually surface in the new relationship.

RIM and Apple top U.S. Smartphone market share

Who’s ready for some statistics? Last September ChangeWave Research conducted a poll of smartphone users in an attempt to gauge the market share impact (if any) of new and announced devices from Apple, Palm, and RIM. We’ve combed over the article and picked out some juicy tidbits for your reading pleasure. According to ChangeWave, 39% of people polled currently own a smartphone. Of that sample, 77% own either an Apple, Palm, or RIM branded device (I know, we’re curious about the other 23% as well). RIM polled the largest portion of U.S. market share with 40% followed by Apple at 30% and Palm with a measly 7%. Apple did top the customer satisfaction poll as 74% of iPhone users described themselves as “very satisfied” with their purchase; compare that with RIM at 48% and Palm at 33%. The iPhone also ranked first in future purchases plans of those polled who did not currently own a smartphone, but plan to purchase one in the next 90 days. Also 36% indicated a preference towards the iPhone, 27% towards the BlackBerry, and 8% towards Palm. Any peeps out there with plans to upgrade to a smartphone in the near future? What are you leaning towards? Apple iPhone?

Trinidad and Tobago Carnival Dates 2009 to 2015

Trinidad and Tobago's annual Carnival festival -- the biggest and best in the Caribbean, and one of the top public celebrations in the world -- varies from year to year depending upon the Lenten calendar. Here are the 2009-2015 dates for Trinidad's Carnival - or at least Carnival Monday and Tuesday, the "official" celebration days, although the party always starts at least the previous Friday:
  • 2009: Feb. 23-24
  • 2010: Feb. 15-16
  • 2011: March 7-8
  • 2012: Feb. 20-21
  • 2013: Feb. 11-12
  • 2014: March 3-4
  • 2015: Feb. 16-17
By the way, while it may seem to be absurd to be thinking about an even in 2015, it is far from ridiculous to start planning your visit to Trinidad Carnival a year or more in advance. The party is extremely popular with locals, Trini expatriates, and tourists alike, so you need to get an early start if you want to get a good hotel or guest-house room, join a Carnival band, and a seat on a Carnival-season flight!
